Isle of Capri, you can’t take the Sheoak from me!!!

This song is from the perspective of someone traversing the Isle of Capri, an urban island nestled in the Nerang River, opposite the rising skyscrapers of the famous Surfers Paradise. It is the 60’s, maybe the 70’s and this young girl is musing that all the Sheoak trees are dancing for her. But she also notices that they are disappearing as the houses take over,with their pontoons and jetties and so she sings “They can’t take the Sheoaks from me!!”

Today there is just one grove of Casuarina trees left, near the beach at Franquin Park, on an island that would have been full of Sheoak trees. They overlook Girung Island…a tiny, wild island full of Sheoak trees. And so they survive.
